After two years on the force, on Wednesday the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office announced the retirement of K9 Benny.
The K9 is a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois who came arrived to the Sheriff's Office from France in late 2018. Benny is set to retire to the care of his handler, Deputy Justin Ughoc.
Benny's retirement comes after the K9 sustained a career-ending injury during a training exercise in September. According to the Sheriff's Office, Benny had to undergo surgery for an injury to one of his legs.
During his tenure, K9 Benny helped arrest several suspects and performed narcotics busts as well, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office says it plans to fill the vacancy soon. At this time, the agency has five active K9s.
