An 84-year-old man from San Luis Obispo was killed in a crash on Highway 46 East Sunday evening.

It happened at about 8:15 p.m., two miles east of the intersection with Highway 41.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the man was driving a motorhome westbound, downhill from Antelope Road. For an unknown reason, CHP investigators say he drifted into the path of an oncoming big rig that was hauling pallets of cardboard packages.

The big rig driver tried to avoid the motorhome, but the two vehicles collided and the big rig rolled off the side of the highway. The motorhome rolled to a stop on the north shoulder of the highway.

The driver of the motorhome was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the big rig suffered major injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

The California Highway Patrol says alcohol, drugs, and distracted driving do not appear to be factors in this collision. It was raining at the time of the crash, but the exact cause is still under investigation.
