UPDATE: (5/28/26 10:45 a.m.): According to police the stabbing victim has died. He has been identified as 21-year-old Nipomo resident Steven Vargas.
The suspect 24-year-old Santa Maria resident Miguel Vazquez remains in custody.

A man is in the hospital for surgery following a stabbing in Santa Maria.
Santa Maria police say the attack happened Saturday near the intersection of Plaza Drive and Broadway. Officers received reports of the incident around 6:50 p.m.
They say a friend of the victim attempted to drive him to the hospital but stopped at a nearby In-N-Out to call for help. That In-N-Out location remains closed.
Police are still investigating. No further information is available at this time.
