The school year is right around the corner and many students along the Central Coast need your help.

The annual school supply drive Stuff the Bus starts Friday.

Pencils, glue, scissors, backpacks -- all the items a kid needs for back-to-school time are needed.

Last year, people donated supplies worth $15,000.

Organizers say essential school supplies are greatly needed in both San Luis Obispo County and Northern Santa Barbara County.

"There are kids who are disadvantaged or low-income individuals who cannot afford the school supplies so those are the students we target and try to help out," explained Sandy Soria Sosa, Northern Santa Barbara County United Way Program Coordinator. "We also do need volunteers in both locations so if you're interested in helping out the community, a way of giving back is also coming to contribute your time."

Here's how you can help -- when you go shopping, pick up a few extra items to donate.

The goal is to fill a school bus with school supplies.

Buses will be stationed at the following locations from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. this Friday, August 9 through Sunday, August 11:

  • Kmart, Atascadero
  • Walmart, Arroyo Grande
  • Staples, San Luis Obispo
  • Walmart & Staples, Paso Robles
  • Cookie Crock Warehouse, Cambria
  • Walmart, Santa Maria
  • Walmart, Lompoc

All new school supplies are welcome, including backpacks for kids and teens.
