The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians has donated $100,000 to rebuild Camp Rancho Alegre which burned in the 2017 Whittier Fire.

That fire burned more than 18,000 acres in the Santa Ynez Mountains. A total of 16 homes were destroyed near Highway 154.

At Camp Rancho Alegre, 47 of the 50 structures were burned.

The camp has served as a camping destination for the Boy Scouts of America. It has also been a unique educational experience for school children at the outdoor school for more than 50 year.

The funds donated by the tribe were raised during the 2019 Chumash Charity Golf Classic, a two-day tournament that benefited the Los Padres Council, Boy Scouts of America capital campaign and the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians Foundation's Technology in Schools Program

The entire rebuild process is estimated to cost $18,000,000.
