UPDATE (Tuesday, April 29, 1:55 p.m.) - The California Highway Patrol has released new information about a deadly wrong-way crash in Nipomo on Monday.

Officers say that Fernando Contreras, 70, of Santa Maria, was driving southbound on Orchard Road in a Chevrolet Silverado. Just south of Cherry Blossom Place, Contreras crashed head-on into a Toyota RAV 4 driven by Darlene Leticia Scruggs, 49, of Nipomo.

The force of the impact pushed the Toyota off the roadway while the Silverado rolled over, crashing into a BMW that was traveling northbound behind the Toyota.

Contreras and Scruggs died at the scene. The driver of the BMW survived.

Officers believe Contreras was speeding and driving the wrong way at the time of the crash.

The CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has further information about this incident to contact Officer R. Chavez at (805) 594-8700.
