The Joe behind Trader Joe's has died

Trader Joe's is mourning the loss of its founder Joe Coulombe.

The company announced he passed away Friday in Pasadena, California.

The first Trader Joe's opened in Pasadena in 1967.

The grocer is known for affordable wine and unusual food.

Coulombe retired in 1988 when the chain had 19 stores.

Today it has over 500 stores in 42 states.

Coulombe was 89-years-old. He reportedly died from a longtime illness.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alice, three children and six grandchildren.
