Two students in the Palo Alto School District in California were sent home Friday when school officials learned their parent may have been exposed to the coronavirus.

One of those students goes to Palo Alto High School.

The other student goes to JLS Middle School.

The school superintendent says the students will not be allowed back in class until the district has more information.

Public health officials say schools and businesses need to prepare to adjust to a developing situation.

"Schools should prepare for absenteeism, prepare for learning at home. Businesses should replace meetings with teleconferences and increase options for working at home,” said County Public Health Dept. Director Dr. Sara Cody.

As the virus spreads, some medical professionals are telling patients who have been in areas with high numbers of infections to postpone appointments for at least two weeks.
