For years, drivers traveling through the Castillo Street undercrossing in Santa Barbara have encountered water on the road, but after two months of repair work, Caltrans says the area has visually improved.

According to Caltrans, the groundwater level at the undercrossing is above the elevation of the street, causing the road to be wet year-round.
During intermittent closures of the Castillo Street off-ramp, crews installed a groundwater drainage system.
The work included trenching along the sidewalk to connect four pipes, cleaning out the pipes, adding drainage inlets at each location, and coring 10-inch holes at each drainage inlet to allow groundwater into the drainage system.
