On Saturday, a local veteran celebrated his 100th birthday in Santa Maria.
Community members gathered to honor U.S. Navy veteran William Root, who fought in World War II.
Root was also a world traveler, having visited every continent during his lifetime.
To commemorate his 100th birthday milestone, the veteran was presented with several certificates to recognize his service.
