Santa Maria Police Department has released results from a DUI checkpoint they conducted on Saturday, August 15.
From 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., 696 vehicles passed through the southbound checkpoint in the 100-200 block of South Broadway.
Of those vehicles, 160 drivers were screened:
- 4 drivers were arrested for DUI
- 12 drivers were cited for driving without a valid driver's license
- 2 individuals were arrested for outstanding warrants
- 1 individual was arrested for resisting arrest
According to the department, DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes and arrests.
The DUI checkpoints are meant to promote public safety by removing impaired drivers from the road.
The department encourages everyone to have a plan before they consume alcohol, whether that means taking a taxi, rideshare, public transportation, or getting a ride from a sober driver.
