Arroyo Grande native Garrett Owens has his eyes set on his childhood dream, playing in the NFL. The placekicker recently returned from the Los Angeles Chargers local pro day, a day where NFL teams host players who live, attended colleges or high schools in and around its city to work out in front of coaches and scouts.
Owens grew up as an athlete and graduated from Arroyo Grande High School in 2012 where he was a CIF state champion, All-State receiver, and league MVP.
After high school, Owens received a full athletic scholarship to Oregon State where he was a three-year starter. He later transferred to Iowa State as a grad transfer starter.
During Owens’ collegiate career, he was All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and led Iowa State in scoring with 96 points, tying for fifth in the program’s season record book.
“I’ve been preparing for this all my life,” said Owens. “Sports is all I’ve ever known, I grew up playing football, soccer, basketball, and running track. And getting to college and being able to compete at that level, and now being able to kind of reach my ultimate goal as a child – growing up wanting to play in the NFL. Hopefully, I can live out that dream.”
The 2018 NFL draft is April 26-28 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
