The Morro Bay football program is one of the newest members of the CIF Central Section and will be competing in Division 3 in 2018. The Pirates are also one of six team added to the brand new Ocean League.

Morro Bay are coming off a 2017 campaign in which they finished 2-8 overall, 1-2 in the Northern League.

David Kelley is entering his fourth season as the Pirates’ head coach, and he says if there’s one lesson he wants his players to learn this year, it’s how to close out the last 18 minutes of each ball game.

"Finish. The thing we talked about all offseason is the matter of finishing," Kelley said. "We kept coming up short in the fourth quarter and didn’t finish properly. Everything we’ve been doing in the offseason, everything out here has been about finishing."

"When you come back from a season like that, it’s tough but it’s also the mindset that it can only go up from here," senior lineman Lee Valdez added. "We’re not worried about record, we’re not worried about scoring or anything, it’s doing our best. If we do all those things, I’m sure we’ll have a good season."

Morro Bay will host Mission Prep to open its season on August 17.
