Central Coast running phenom Jordan Hasay is serving as the official race ambassador for the  23rd annual City to the Sea Half Marathon and 5K.

Hasay caught attention from the running world last year when she set the record for the fastest marathon debut by an American woman. She dedicated the Boston Marathon run to her late mother, Teresa, who unexpectedly died six months prior to the race.

The City to the Sea is particularly special to Hasay because this was her mom’s one and local race Hasay got to see as a child. She almost missed her mom at the finish line because Teresa finished much faster than anticipated.

“She would run six miles every day but would never run double that. The weekend before, she kind of did a trial run of the course, and I swear it took her three hours; it was so slow,” Hasay said. “So, we thought she would not be anywhere near the front, and that’s why we took our time at breakfast, and then she so competitive so it kind of made me realize where I got it from and that was kind of the first inspiration for me to get out and run.”

Hasay will be firing the starting gun for the City to the Sea Half Marathon. Her brother Jedd Hasay will also be racing it for the first time.

The City to the Sea Half Marathon starts at 7 a.m. at the intersection of Higuera and Court Street, downtown San Luis Obispo this Sunday, October 14.
