Alyssa Joseph of Righetti and Santa Maria’s Yair Torres were named Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.
Joseph, the female athlete of the week, helped lead the Righetti girls volleyball team to a sweep of East Bakersfield in the first round of the Division 3 CIF Central Section playoffs. Joseph recorded six kills, three aces, two blocks, and three digs.
Torres, the male athlete of the week, ran a 15:30.80 at the Santa Barbara County Championships to help the Santa Maria Saints capture their first-ever county cross country title.
“The county race, it was really exciting,” Torres said. “I was looking forward to that race. I never thought that we’d win that race. I was surprised that it was our first county championship. It was really exciting.”
“The last few games have been really intense since we knew CIF was coming up,” Joseph said. “I feel very happy with the way I’ve been playing this season. It’s my first year on varsity so I feel very accomplished.”
