Cal Poly falls in season finale to UC Santa Barbara

Posted

Senior third baseman Noa Yakir helped produce the Cal Poly softball program’s lone run on Saturday afternoon in her final at-bat at Bob Janssen Field, but the Mustangs were held to just three hits by UC Santa Barbara and completed the 2019 season with a 9-1, five-inning, run-rule loss.

UC Santa Barbara opened Saturday’s game with a two-run effort after just four hitters as first baseman Devan Sperry followed back-to-back singles from left fielder Sammy Fabian and designated player Ally Nodohara with a two-run double.

The Gauchos then tripled their lead in the top half of the second. Fabian first ran the advantage to 4-0 with a two-run double before Sperry singled up the middle to provide the Gauchos two additional runs.

UC Santa Barbara placed the decision in run-rule territory with a three-run effort in the top of the fifth as a two-out, run-scoring single from pinch hitter Carissa Felix led to the ninth and, ultimately, decisive run.

Offensively, Cal Poly enjoyed a two-out single from freshman designated player Lily Amos in the top of the first, but the Mustangs were kept hitless until sophomore center fielder Noellah Ramos singled with two down in the seventh. Two batters later, Yakir singled down the right field line. Sophomore second baseman Sarah Wulff scored Cal Poly’s lone run on the sequence after Gauchos right fielder Rayna Cohen sailed a throw over the head of UC Santa Barbara third baseman Kayla Krantz.
