In a statement released Monday afternoon, the San Luis Obispo Baseball Organization announced they will not field a team during the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Blues, one of the longest-running summer collegiate programs in the nation, draw around 35,000 fans annually. General Manager of the Blues commented on the cancelation of the 2020 season:
"My family and I have been working for more than a decade to build the Blues into a community staple. It breaks our hearts to have to cancel the 2020 season, however, we feel strongly that we have a social obligation not to encourage group gatherings and put ANYONE at further risk until everyone is safe. Financially, the ramifications of this decisions are quite devastating. It will set us back almost 10 years. Despite that, we have made a conscious decision to protect our fans, players, coaching staff, host families, game day staff, vendors and the community in general above all else.”
A member of the 10-team, California Collegiate League (CCL), the Blues plan to return for the 2021 season.
