The Santa Maria Joint Unified High School District athletic programs were allowed to practice for the first time since March on Monday.

At Pioneer Valley, the football team was the only sport to practice on Monday, but the cross country and volleyball teams will start practice on Tuesday. This period before practice officially starts in December will be an “extended summer.”

Athletic Director, Jeff Monteiro, says all social distancing measures must be followed by the athletes during practice. Monteiro says the school district has a plan in place if students do contract COVID-19.

“This is a foot in the door. We feel it’s in a positive direction. We know there could be some setbacks, and I think we’re ready for them. I think this is also a time where people are seeing some hope and seeing some movement.”

Monteiro says the first football scrimmage for Pioneer Valley will be January 7th. The games will start following the scrimmage.
