No. 5 Cal Poly beach volleyball sweeps both matches Sunday at Stanford

It was another stellar day for the Cal Poly beach volleyball team as they swept both of their matches Sunday 5-0 at a tournament hosted by Stanford. The No. 5 Mustangs (22-4) beat No. 20 Saint Mary’s and Pacific.

In the first match of the day against the Gaels (12-10), Cal Poly dropped just one set during the five matches. Freshman Tiadora Miric returned from an injury she suffered Saturday to partner with sophomore Torrey Van Winden to win at the No. 1 spot in straight sets 21-15, 21-15.

Sophomore Emily Sonny and junior Samantha Manley won at the No. 2 slot 21-16, 21-14. Junior Adlee Van Winden and senior Taylor Nelson got the win at the No. 3 spot 21-10, 21-15.

At the No. 4 position, senior Raeann Greisen and freshman Macy Gordon won in three sets 21-14, 20-22, 15-9. Senior Hannah Hubbard and sophomore Heather Pembroke won 22-20, 21-17 to secure the 5-0 win for Cal Poly.

The Mustangs continued their strong play in the second match of the day against the Tigers (6-10), winning all five matches in straight sets. Playing at the No. 1 spot, Sonny and Manley won 21-17, 21-10 to win their team-high 23rd match of the season.

Nelson and Adlee Van Winden continued their stellar play, winning at the No. 2 slot 21-9, 21-16 to improve their record to 18-2 on the year.

Gordon and Greisen won their fourth match in a row after a 22-20, 21-13 win at the No. 3 spot. Hubbard and Pembroke won at the No. 4 position 22-20, 21-11 to move to 8-2 as a pairing.

Sophomore Brayden Grunewald and freshman Jamie Stivers got the start at the No. 5 spot and won 21-14, 21-18 for their second win this season and complete the 5-0 victory.

Cal Poly travels to Malibu next weekend for two matches Saturday. They will take on No. 15 Arizona at 9:15 a.m. and No. 2 Pepperdine at 11:30. The Mustangs have already beaten both teams this season.
