Lighter rain showers linger through Tuesday

After what could be called the most intense storm of the season, rain showers will continue to linger in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties through Tuesday.

Saturday morning, more than an inch of rain fell within fifteen minutes and half an inch of rain fell within five minutes in the southern Santa Barbara County mountains.

Peak wind gusts reached 92 miles per hour in the Santa Ynez Mountains. Moving forward, sustained winds will continue to be around 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 or 50 mph. A wind advisory has been issued for San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties.

Rain showers are expected to return around 8 p.m. for San Luis Obispo County and closer to midnight for southern Santa Barbara County. There is a possibility we will see brief, heavier downpours at times, but they will stay well below critical thresholds for debris flow.

Between Saturday afternoon and midnight, an additional 0.75″ could fall in SLO and Santa Barbara Counties. Sunday through Tuesday, our region could see an additional one to three inches of rain.

A flash flood watch remains for the recent burn areas of Santa Barbara County through early Sunday. Burn scars of the Thomas, Sherpa, Whittier, and Ventura County side of the Woolsey fires are considered to be at risk for flooding.

A high surf advisory and coastal flood advisory is in effect through Sunday morning in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. Breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet are expected Saturday, building to 12 to 19 feet by Sunday morning. Flooding may impact coastal walkways and access roads.
