Cambria community service leaders and local public safety officials met at the Cambria Fire Department on Thursday, August 6th to announce new federal funding for the department.
During a press conference at that station it was announced that $935,000 would be awarded to the Cambria Fire Department to purchase a new Type 1 fire engine and essential firefighting equipment, including extrication tools, self-contained breathing apparatus units, hoses, and radios.
The new frontline engine will support emergency response and safety for the approximately 5,500 residents that live in the Cambria area.
“We respond to medical aids, vehicle accidents, ocean rescue, wildfires and structure fires. And so that engine is going to give us the ability to continue to respond reliably, because our other fire engines are towards the end of their service life,” said Cambria Fire Chief Michael Burkey.
19th District of California Rep. Jimmy Panetta, who secured the funding, was also in attendance and toured the fire station ahead of the press conference.
The department says the new engine will help firefighters continue protecting lives and property while providing mutual aid to neighboring communities, including San Simeon and other areas of San Luis Obispo County.
