Santa Maria gun shop next to high school prompts gun ‘buffer zone’ requests

Some residents in Santa Maria spoke to the city council about a "gun buffer zone" near the high schools Tuesday night.

Currently, there is a local gun shop across the street from Santa Maria High School.

During the "March For Our Lives," parents, students and community members addressed the shop’s location and decided they wanted to find a way to protect students from tragedies like the mass shooting in Florida.

The "gun buffer zone" — which little information has been released on what that would entail — was brought up during the time designated for public comment, but no action has been taken on their stance.

In order for the city council to act on the public’s request, the topic has to be officially added to the agenda.

There is no indication yet on whether that is going to happen.
