Cal Poly Concrete Canoe Team wins second straight national championship

Cal Poly’s concrete canoe team was named the national champion at a competition Monday in San Diego.

Team members repeated as national champs at the 31st Annual American Society of Civil Engineers Concrete Canoe Competition.

The team won in the following categories: Overall, oral presentation, final product, men’s and women’s endurance and sprint races, plus the co-ed sprint race.

The canoe, named "Van Gogh," weighs 178 lbs and is 19’4" long.

ASCE awarded this year’s team a $5,000 scholarship and a trophy at an awards ceremony Monday night. The organization will also award a total of $9,000 in academic scholarships to Cal Poly’s undergraduate civil engineering program.

ASCE holds the competition to help civil engineering students work with concrete mix designs and gain project management experience.

Cal Poly won the national title in 2017 with a different canoe.
