A federal case against a former airman at Vandenberg Air Force Base indicted on two counts of involuntary manslaughter for a crash nearly two years ago near the base has been dismissed.

The U.S. Department of Justice attributes the dismissal of the Shaquille Lindsey’s case to a jurisdictional issue. A DOJ spokesperson says the matter is now being reviewed by the DOJ and its “law enforcement colleagues.”

The August 28, 2016 crash along Santa Lucia Canyon Road killed two people, Ruben and Bertha Betancourt, and seriously injured their son, Juan.

Lindsey of Covington, Georgia, who was 23 at the time, was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, using his cellphone while driving, and speeding when he drove into oncoming traffic and hit the victims’ car head-on.

Lindsey also faced a charge of driving under the influence and causing bodily injury.

He faced up to 18 years in federal prison if convicted of the charges.
