Local robotics team raising funds

A local robotics team has some extra funding as it prepares for more competitions this year.

The Atascadero “Greybots” robotics team is competing for a company called FIRST, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. The team held a fundraiser at Blaze Pizza in Paso Robles Friday night.

They’re trying to defend their 2017 World Championship title. They have six weeks to build each of their robots, and it’s not cheap. Once they’re done, they usually disassemble the robots and reuse the parts to save money.

“I really like doing robotics because it teaches you a lot of life skills, like with working as a team, which is really helpful for getting a job and stuff like that. Also, you just learn a lot about other people and other teams. You communicate with a lot of other people around the world,” said Chris Lawson, an Atascadero High School Junior who has been on the team all three years of his high school career.

The team plans to hold several more fundraising events throughout the year. You can also donate online. For more information, click here.
