The CHP identified the driver involved in a deadly crash on Highway 46 East near the Shandon Rest Area.

The crash was reported around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

CHP says Hugo Sanchez Carillo, 28 of Gonzalez, was driving westbound on Highway 46 east, just west of Lucy Brown Road. Investigators say he was driving about 65 miles per hour when he made some sort of unsafe turning movement. CHP says the vehicle crossed over the median and rolled over multiple times landing on its wheels and blocking eastbound lanes.

A female passenger was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. Her name hasn’t been released pending notification of next of kin.

Carillo suffered major injuries and was flown to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo.

Six other passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries and were taken to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton.

The CHP is investigating the crash as being DUI related, and officers say Carillo is under arrest.
