UPDATE (9:40 a.m.) – The California Highway Patrol says a head-on crash on Los Osos Valley Road Thursday morning was the result of a wrong-way driver.

It happened at about 7:20 a.m. just east of Foothill Blvd.

CHP Public Information Officer Mike Poelking says a Honda Civic was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes and struck a silver Dodge head-on. The vehicle directly in front of the Dodge was able to swerve out of the way to avoid the oncoming Civic, but the Dodge could not move in time to prevent the crash.

The drivers of the two cars, who were the only people in each vehicle, were taken to the hospital with major injuries.

Poelking says it’s unknown why the Civic was traveling in the wrong lane. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

As of 9:08 a.m., CHP reported the roadway was open.
