A vegetation fire in Atascadero was caused by a lawn mower blade striking a rock, which ignited the grass, according to fire officials.

The fire started around 2 p.m. along San Marcos Road. A number of equipment and 28 firefighters responded to the scene.

Arriving firefighters found two acres of grass burning at a “moderate to rapid rate of spread” near several homes. Heavy smoke limited visibility which made it difficult to control lines.

It took about an hour to contain the fire. Mop up took an additional three hours.

No one was injured. Firefighters saved an estimated $2 million in property.
