The City of Pismo Beach has revoked permits for an iconic Shell Beach restaurant after the building was demolished during a renovation project.

City staff began discussing the future of the Alex Bar-B-Q site along the 800 block of Shell Beach Road after the building was torn down in September due to some sort of communication error.

City Manager Jim Lewis says the Pismo Beach Planning Commission on Tuesday voted 3-1 to revoke the coastal development and architectural review permits for the building.

Lewis says he was “very firm” in his request for that to happen.

The permits initially only allowed for the demolition of 350 square feet of floor area and a remodel.

The restaurant, established in 1943, was believed to have been built in the 1920s.

The project owner, Compass Health, can now choose whether to submit a new application for the project.
