Santa Maria police arrested a man they believe responsible for at least two sexual assaults.

Police say their investigation began in November with the report of a sexual assault that had occurred in the city. They say detectives had limited information so the case remained open.

A second assault with similar circumstances was reported on December 2, and police say evidence in that case enabled them to link the two investigations and identify the suspect.

The suspect, Christian Jesus Ponce, 21, of Santa Maria was reportedly arrested on December 27 and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of sexual assault.

Detectives believe there could be other victims and police are asking any potential witnesses or victims to contact police by calling (805) 928-3781, ext. 1361. Anonymous tips can be made by calling (805) 928-3781, ext. 2677.
