Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Monday morning who they say broke into a home in the Tanglewood neighborhood west of Santa Maria.

It happened at about 9 a.m. at a home in the 3500 block of Satinwood Rd.

Sheriff’s officials say the victim told deputies that a man broke into the home and stole several items. When the victim confronted the burglar, he said the man swung a “large log” at him before running away.

Deputies say they found the suspect, identified as Rafael Rayas, 30, of Tanglewood, standing near the corner of Sandalwood Dr. and Myrtlewood Rd. still holding a large piece of wood.

He was taken into custody and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, possession of a dirk or dagger, and being a felon in possession of pepper spray.
