A building that used to house a stereo shop was demolished Monday in Santa Maria to make way for a new, four-story building.

The future mixed-used project will be built on the northwest corner of Broadway and Main St.

The city council approved the project in January 2018.

It will include space on the ground floor for retail businesses. Residential apartments will make up the top three floors.

City leaders hope it will attract more businesses and encourage people to walk around the downtown area.
