Lompoc police arrested a taxi driver Tuesday on suspicion of DUI and fleeing the scene of a crash.

Shortly after 10 a.m., officers responded to the Ocean Ave. and E St. intersection for a report that a pedestrian had been struck.

Police say a child was walking his bicycle through the crosswalk with his grandmother when he was struck by a vehicle belonging to a local taxi company.

The child was not seriously hurt.

Investigators say the driver left the scene but witnesses followed him and made him drive back to the intersection.

Police say the driver, identified as Matthew J. Buell, 30, of Lompoc was found to be “very intoxicated” and was taken into custody on felony charges.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact the Lompoc Police Department at (805) 736-2341.
