An annual fundraiser for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial High School Scholarship Fund was held Sunday in San Luis Obispo.

The organization has awarded scholarships to college-bound teens in San Luis Obispo since 1968.

"These students have done good work through their careers as high school students and then they go on either to a trade school or community college or university and we just like to support students who have a clear goal in terms of what they want to do with their life and we just want to give them a little support," said Mary Matakovich, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial High School Scholarship Fund Committee President.

Last year, they gave out 17 scholarships worth $1,100 each.

The annual community chicken barbecue at the San Luis Obispo Elks Lodge is the group's primary fundraiser.

However, the organization also accepts donations throughout the year.

Donations to the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund can be sent to P.O. Box 1693, San Luis Obispo, CA 93406.
