California Highway Patrol is initiating it's maximum enforcement period, meaning more officers will be patrolling for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The increased patrol starts Wednesday at 6 p.m. and lasts through the end of Dec. 1.

Thanksgiving weekend is historically the busiest time for traffic

AAA estimates about 54 million Americans will travel for the holiday, with many of them using vehicles to get around.

According to CHP data, 59 people died in collisions on California roads last Thanksgiving weekend.

Seat belts were not used by about a third of all of those victims.

As for intoxicated drivers, CHP made 931 arrests last Thanksgiving weekend for driving under the influence.
