Family and friends hosted a 'Nickels for Noah' Charity BBQ fundraiser on Saturday for a young man in Santa Maria who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Event attendees ran a 3k race and celebrated afterwards by purchasing tri-tip sandwiches, chips and drinks for $10.

All the proceeds from the event will benefit the family of Noah Slocum, a sophomore at Orcutt Academy High School in Orcutt who was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma last year.

Slocum's classmates who organized the charity BBQ say the Orcutt Lions Club also helped bring the event come to life.

"Noah is one of the most enthusiastic people I knew in my geology class," said Dante Surra, one of the students who organized the fundraiser. "It sucks to see people like that get into situations like this."

Community members interested in helping the Slocum family can donate to their GoFundMe page here.
