A monolith that appeared in Atascadero Wednesday is already gone.

The City says video surfaced on social media showing a group of out-of-towners removing the steel monolith on Pine Mountain.

City officials say the Atascadero Police Department is reviewing the video and looking into the incident, adding they have not received any reports to date that the monolith had been removed or stolen.

“We are upset that these young men felt the need to drive 5 hours to come into our community and vandalize the Monolith. The Monolith was something unique and fun in an otherwise stressful time,” said Mayor Heather Moreno in a press release.

The three-sided structure was about 10-feet tall and officials estimate it weighed around 200 pounds, adding there is no vehicle access in that area of Stadium Park.

The City says it’s still unknown who placed the monolith there in the first place.

Pictures released by the City show only some rebar left where the monolith once stood.
