The Timber Fire burning in Big Sur is forcing residents out of the Monterey County region, and hotels in San Luis Obispo County are stepping up to help those displaced.
Aaron Graves, founder of Everlygrove Hotels, said his property is among those offering discounted rates to first responders and evacuees.
"It's displacing people from the entire Big Sur region, which is really an extension of our home here," Graves said. "We wanted to contribute everything that we could for those that were displaced, those that are in need and really just trying to offset the tragedy that is the Timber Fire."
Graves said guests have already taken advantage of the offer. He said there are nearly a dozen Everlygrove hotels in San Luis Obispo County, and the discount varies by property.
In Morro Bay, the Q Inn is also offering reduced rates. Co-founder John Solu said the hotel is cutting its standard rate by 20%.
Solu said the discounted rates are only available if displaced individuals call (805) 858-8867.
"We need to help people whenever we can," Solu said. "Unfortunately, we had businesses that take advantage of that. But we basically said straight, whatever our rate is, exactly 20% off."
Solu said the timing is challenging, with Cal Poly's upcoming move-in week limiting available rooms.
"But if somebody calls, they get that room [if they're coming from] the fires. Unfortunately, this weekend we're completely full. But again, next week we have it available and hopefully it doesn't go that long. But if it does, there will be availability for them."
San Luis Obispo County Office of Emergency Services Coordinator Scott Milner said the county is monitoring the situation and is prepared to assist if the fire moves closer to the county line or if Monterey County requests support.
"We work closely with the neighboring agencies, so we're always standing by to help a neighboring agency," Milner said. "When we had the Madre and Gifford fires closer to the county line with Santa Barbara, we were all working closely with them, establishing shelters and animal shelters and things of that nature."
Milner said crews are on standby and ready to respond.
Solu said he can smell smoke in Morro Bay from the Timber Fire. As of Monday afternoon, KSBY meteorologist Jim Castillo reported spots of moderate air quality in SLO County, though the fire remains far from the county line.
"This is our time to give back," Solu said. "If it's available and you're able to do it, you should give back."
