San Luis Obispo County is set to receive millions of dollars to help offset the impact of operations at Diablo Canyon Power Plant.

State Senator John Laird (D-Santa Cruz) announced a new agreement on August 17 between the county and PG&E.

The agreement, which mirrors legislation authored by Senator Laird, will have PG&E provide more than $16 million over the next two years.

The money will support local governments, schools, public safety agencies and essential services in the area.

The state previously extended Diablo Canyon Power Plant’s operations through 2030, but the extension did not include continued community funding.

PG&E says the new money will not come from state taxpayers or utility ratepayers.

The agreement calls for two annual payments of $8.3 million. A partial payment is to be made by December 31, 2026, with the second annual payment to follow next year.
