The Cal Poly Rugby Club hosted a West Coast Sevens collegiate rugby tournament Saturday afternoon at the Mustangs’ practice fields on the campus of Cal Poly.

21 clubs total competed in men’s sevens, women’s sevens, and junior varsity sevens competition.

Three of the top ten men’s clubs were in action, including the No. 1 team in the nation, Cal Bears.

The Cal Poly men took 5th place, while the Cal Poly women went undefeated to claim the women’s championship. The Cuesta men’s club won the JV bracket in its first ever intercollegiate competition.

Tournament Director Andy Doukas says the event was a huge success.

“It’s just an honor for our West Coast Sevens to have this kind of talent, people, and teams,” Doukas said. “To have the 21 teams out here, it’s just a really special day for us.”

The next West Coast Sevens tournament will be held in San Francisco from October 21-22.
