TiAndre Jackson-Young scored 18 points and UT-Arlington erased a nine-point deficit in the final six minutes of regulation and went on to defeat Cal Poly 75-70 in overtime in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night inside Mott Athletics Center.
Brian Warren added 11 points for the visiting Mavericks (4-8), who outrebounded the Mustangs 44-36 and forced 23 Cal Poly turnovers.
Cal Poly, which fell to 3-8, was led by Donovan Fields and Mark Crowe, each with 18 points. Marcellus Garrick added 11.
Crowe hit a 70-foot heave at the buzzer ending the first half, giving Cal Poly a 39-33 lead at the break. The Mavericks trimmed the deficit to one point twice and tied the game at 50-50 on a jumper by Jackson-Young with 9:52 to play.
Cal Poly then went on an 11-2 run for a 61-52 advantage with 6:07 to play. Garrick capped the run by hitting back-to-back field goals. UT-Arlington scored the final nine points of regulation to force overtime, Warren scoring a layup with three seconds remaining. The Mustangs missed eight floor shots, one free throw and turned the ball over three times in the final six minutes.
Cal Poly’s only lead of the extra period was at 70-69 following a three-pointer from Fields with 43 seconds left. Warren, DJ Bryant and Radshad Davis each hit two free throws for the Mavericks the rest of the way as Cal Poly was outscored 6-0 in the final 42 seconds.
Crowe, who has a team-leading eight double-digit scoring games this season, made six of eight three-pointers, a career high, for his 18 points. Fields has seven double-digit scoring games this year.
The Mustangs played their third overtime game of the year and had a streak of three straight overtime wins snapped by the Mavericks.
Andres Ibarguen grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for UTA. Cal Poly’s top rebounder was Junior Ballard with seven.
The Mavericks made 40 percent of their floor shots (23 of 58), including six of 21 from long range, while Cal Poly connected on 42 percent (26 of 62), sinking 10 of 32 treys.
With Cal Poly committing 12 more personal fouls, 29-17, than UTA, the Mavericks made 23 of 34 free throws while the Mustangs attempted just 12 charity shots, making eight.
Cal Poly plays its next game Dec. 29 at Siena.
