Templeton youth soccer is soaring to new heights

Boys and girls youth soccer is on the rise in Templeton and the Eagles are soaring.

Five different All-Star teams were put together by the Templeton Recreation Department for tournaments in the months of December and January – boys and girls U10, boys and girls U12, and girls U14.

Those five groups combined for an astounding record of 72 wins, one loss, and four ties. Each squad brought home titles in the Southbay Shootout in Los Osos, the Orcutt Cup Classic, the Santa Maria Strawberry Cup, and the Cal South Tournament of All-Stars.

How about this for a crazy stat? The five teams scored a combined 353 goals and gave up only 26 goals.

Templeton recreation supervisor Melissa Johnson says this year’s success is mind-blowing.

“This year alone has been off the hook. There’s no comparison, and to watch these kids and watch these coaches experience so much success, they’ve earned it,” Johnson said.

“You know, it’s been so much fun to watch. It puts all the pain, all the tears, and all the excitement into perspective. This is why we do what we do,” Johnson added. To be called up by a bunch of Los Angeles area teams and say, ‘Are you sure you’re not a club?’ It’s incredible. It’s such a neat experience.”

Since Johnson joined the recreation department in 2004, the youth numbers have doubled to nearly 750 kids.
