No. 7 Mustangs go undefeated at day one of Big West Challenge

The Cal Poly beach volleyball team went a perfect 3-0 Friday at the first day of the Big West Challenge in Pismo Beach, extending its winning streak to 10 matches.

The No. 7 Mustangs (13-5, 3-0 BWC), this year’s host of the Big West Challenge, took down CSU Bakersfield, 5-0, Sacramento State, 5-0, and CSUN, 4-1 in their first conference matches of the season.

Cal Poly began the day against the Roadrunners (5-9) without dropping a set. The Mustangs’ No. 1 pairing of senior Crissy Jones and sophomore Tia Miric made quick work of their opponents, winning 21-7, 21-8. Freshman Vanessa Roscoe and junior Brayden Gruenewald also won their match in straight sets at the No. 2 position, 21-13, 21-18.

At the No. 3 spot, sophomore Macy Gordon and freshman Delaney Peranich played strong, winning their match 21-11, 21-9. Freshman Jayelin Lombard and senior Kat Wright paired up at the No. 4 position, winning in dominant fashion, 21-9, 21-9. Junior Heather Pemborke and senior Sam Manley teamed up at the No. 5 spot to complete the sweep, 21-14, 21-16.

Cal Poly then beat the Hornets (1-8), also winning 5-0 without dropping a set. Gruenewald and Roscoe, this time playing at the No. 1 spot, won in straight sets, 21-15, 21-9. At the No. 2 position, Gordon teamed up with junior Emily Sonny for a 21-12, 21-10 win.

The No. 3 pairing of Lombard and Wright continued their strong play with a 21-10. 21-6 win. At the No. 4 spot, Peranich teamed up with Manley for a 21-11, 21-13 win. The sweep was completed after a 21-6, 21-13 win by sophomores Sjea Anderson and Livy Lee.

The Mustangs wrapped up the first day of the Big West Challenge with a 4-1 win over the Matadors (7-8).

In the win, Miric and Jones picked up their second victory of the day at the No. 1 position, 21-10, 21-6. Lombard and Wright capped off their third win of the day with a 21-15, 21-12 victory at the No. 3 spot.

The No. 4 pairing of Peranich and Manley won their second match as a day as a pair, winning 21-19, 21-14. At the No. 5 position, Pembroke and Anderson won their second match of the day with a 21-8, 21-12 victory.

After the first day of play, the standings are as follows: Cal Poly 3-0, CSUN 1-1, Sacramento State 1-1, UC Davis 1-1, Long Beach State 0-0, Hawai’i 0-0, CSU Bakersfield 0-3.

The second day of the Big West Challenge starts Saturday at 9 a.m. The Mustangs play one match against Long Beach State at noon.
