Kailani Cabanting and Caleb Dulay of Righetti were named athletes of the week at the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table in Santa Maria.
Cabanting, the female athlete of the week, captured a pair of titles at the Mountain League track & field championships in Atascadero last Thursday. Cabanting led off the Warriors’ record-setting 4×100-meter relay team which finished in a time of 45.80. She was also the 100-meter hurdles champion in 16.49 seconds.
“I was kind of surprised, actually,” Cabanting said about winning the award. “I’ve been to the Round Table a couple of time for other sports, but I didn’t really expect to win it at all. It was tough but I’m proud of myself for it.”
Dulay, the male athlete of the week, recorded his ninth win of the season last Tuesday in a 4-2 victory over San Luis Obispo. That win secured the Mountain League title for the Warriors’ baseball team. Dulay wrapped up his regular season with a 9-0 record and stellar 0.58 ERA.
“It felt really good, actually,” Dulay said about beating San Luis Obispo. “I felt relieved because I was really nervous the whole game, just trying to build up. I knew they were a good team and that this game was really important for us and my coaches and everything.”
