Giselle Calderon and Richard Castro-Sandoval were honored Monday afternoon in Santa Maria at the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table luncheon.
Calderon, the female athlete of the week, is a sophomore on the Orcutt Academy basketball team. In five games last week for the Spartans, Calderon averaged 12.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while lead the team to a 4-1 record.
"It was quite difficult, the teams were quite good. They played good defense and made me work harder on offense," Calderon said about her performances. "I always like a good, competitive team."
Castro-Sandoval, the male athlete of the week, is a senior on the Santa Ynez wrestling team. Castro-Sandoval pinned his way to the 120lbs title match at the Newbury Park Varsity Tournament over the weekend, and won the championship with an 8-4 decision. He is now 9-0 on the season.
"Honestly, I didn't think I was going to win it today because it's so early in the season and there's so many great athletes out here," Castro-Sandoval said after accepting his award. "I'm just honored to be selected from the majority of the group."
