Aryana Gonzales and Elijah Stevenson were honored Monday afternoon in Santa Maria at the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table luncheon.
Gonzales, the female athlete of the week, is a freshman guard on the Allan Hancock women's basketball team. Gonzales scored a game-high 28 points in the Bulldogs' 74-64 win over Ventura on Saturday. The victory was the program's first against the Pirates in more than a decade. The Mission Prep grad added five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
"I'm not usually the highest scorer, it's usually my teammates Jayce [Bayne] or Alijah [Paquet] that are the highest scorers for us," Gonzales said. "I just couldn't miss in the second half, so I just kept scoring. I think it's a great honor, and I'm very grateful."
Stevenson, the male athlete of the week, is a member of the Orcutt Academy boys basketball team. Stevenson hit a game-winning shot Friday night as the Spartans beat Templeton in double-overtime, 64-63. Stevenson eded the game with 23 points.
"It was an amazing game, and I came in clutch with the last point. When you see the crowd go wild, it's nuts, it's amazing," Stevenson exclaimed.
