Led by junior midfielder Emmanuel Perez’s selection to the second team, three Cal Poly men’s soccer players earned All-Big West Conference recognition for the 2019 season on Tuesday afternoon.

Joining Perez among Cal Poly’s honorees were senior captain and forward Diego Alonso and junior defender Freeman Dwamena – each of whom earned honorable mention recognition.

The Big West’s co-leading scorer with nine goals, Perez also ranked second among conference players in points (21) and game-winning goals (four) and sixth in shot attempts. Among NCAA Division I players, Perez – who enjoyed a five-game goal-scoring streak from Sept. 10-26 – closed the season ranked 22nd in game-wining goals, 24th in shot accuracy (55.3 percent), 44th in total goals and 55th in total points.

The Oct. 21 Big West Player of the Week honoree, Perez enjoyed two-goal games during victories against Gonzaga (Sept. 15) and Westmont (Sept. 19). His nine-goal total and 21-point effort are figures that both rank sixth in Cal Poly single season history.

Alonso, who started in 14 of 15 games, led Cal Poly with four assists, finished second with 31 shot attempts and scored during the program’s 2-1 home victory against No. 24 Loyola Marymount (Sept. 26). Alonso completed his Cal Poly career having played 56 times for the Mustangs while ranking eighth in program history with 11 career assists.

Monday’s announcement marked the first All-Big West honors for both Perez and Alonso.

Dwamena started 15 of 16 games for Cal Poly and notched assists to fuel victories against 24th-ranked Loyola Marymount and CSUN (Oct. 20). Defensively, Dwamena helped Cal Poly record five shutouts – including the 2-0 home win against CSUN and a 1-0 victory at Sacramento State (Oct. 23) that allowed the Mustangs to reach fourth place in the final conference standings.

Dwamena was also named to the Big West All-Freshman Team in 2016.
