Some of disrepair of the City Park in Morro Bay off of Harbor St. and Morro Bay Blvd. has led to some resident concerns.
“This is a special gathering spot for the community and unfortunately in the last several years it’s fallen into some disrepair, said Morro Bay Councilmember Jeff Eckles.
One thing residents have noticed is the removal of the playground. He says the structure was removed about five months ago due to its aging condition.
“This is really the only place that they can climb and run around in the area that we live in," said Morro Bay resident Julie Amber.
Eckles and other City officials held a series of town hall meetings last month to receive community feedback. He told KSBY News many residents want a space for community events.
“They would like to see more activity going on here so programming perhaps through the parks and recreation department," Eckles said. "They’d like to see activities that span all ages."
He added that some updates like enhanced lighting, increased law enforcement, and removal of shopping carts will be done within the next 30 days.
Other updates if approved could take up to two years to implement.
“Moving the farmers market and street fair that occurs Saturday in downtown up here perhaps putting in a pavilion or stage or some kind of gazebo that would be a focal point for the park,” Eckles said.
Eckles said vandalism and illegal activity led to the closure of restrooms, and they’re hoping increased patrols could lead to an eventual reopening.
“A few people are breaking in to those restrooms but the people need a place where they can come and use those restrooms,” Amber said.
Eckles said funds have yet to be finalized for the projects, but that it could be up for discussion during budget hearings in the spring.
