Cleats and flags have made their way to the Morro Bay High School football field as the school just got its first-ever flag football team.
“Being the pioneers and watching them go out there and achieve the level of expertise that they have already is very inspiring,” said James Pond, MBHS Flag Football Head Coach.
Pond says many players on the team have never played the sport before, so their first game on Tuesday was a true test against the seasoned Lompoc High School team.
“The girls adjusted and put up a really good fight against them, kept it close the entire game,” Pond said.
They fell just six points short.
“I think we did really good and hold a lot of potential," said senior wide receiver Parker Brigham.
“I think that we’re really taking a big step in women’s sports, especially now that we have girls flag football and I’m really happy to see so many girls try out from so many different high schools from around the area and especially our little high school too," said sophomore quarterback Josie Smithe.
“Yeah, it’s really exciting,” Brigham added.
They both say they have their eyes set on the CIF playoffs.
“I feel like we have pretty good team chemistry and working on that even more can always help, and yeah, perfecting the little things,” Brigham said.
