The Los Angeles City Council has approved reinstatement of rules limiting places where homeless people can live in cars, vans and RVs.
The council voted 13-0 Tuesday to restore regulations barring people from sleeping at night in vehicles on residential streets or living anytime in vehicles within a block of parks, schools, preschools or daycare facilities.
The regulations had expired at the beginning of July. The Los Angeles Times reports Mayor Eric Garcetti plans to sign the measure, extending the rules to January.
Advocates for the homeless criticized the council decision as cruel.
The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s most recent count found more than 9,500 people live in vehicles throughout the city.
A scattering of so-called safe parking sites have a capacity for fewer than 200 vehicles each night.
